ART THERAPY AND SUSTAINABILITY

As an art therapist, I strive to practice as sustainably as possible. I primarily conduct sessions via teletherapy, reducing the carbon footprint associated with travel. I encourage my clients to use nature-based items, online collage sources, found objects, and thrifted art supplies in their creative processes. By promoting resourcefulness and creativity with accessible materials, we not only engage in meaningful art-making but also foster a deeper connection to our environment and community. Together, we can create art that honors both personal expression and sustainability.

ART THERAPY EXAMPLES

COLLAGE

Collage is an excellent medium for art therapy because it utilizes pre-made images, allowing clients to engage in the creative process without the pressure of starting from scratch. This accessibility makes it especially effective in an online format, where clients can easily gather and arrange images that resonate with them. The symbolic nature of collage enables individuals to express complex emotions and ideas visually, facilitating deeper exploration and understanding of their experiences. This medium can serve as a powerful tool for self-discovery and healing.

NATURE

Nature provides a rich and inspiring medium for creative art-making, particularly through layered constructions like mandalas. A mandala, traditionally rooted in spiritual practices, is a geometric design that symbolizes the universe, representing harmony and unity. By using natural materials such as leaves, stones, and flowers, we can create these intricate designs, connecting to both the environment and the deep cultural significance of mandalas. This approach not only fosters creativity but also encourages mindfulness and a deeper appreciation for the natural world, promoting a sense of peace and balance in the therapeutic process.

PAINTING

Each art medium provides a unique pathway for exploring and expressing emotions. For example, painting often allows us to delve deeply into our feelings, as the act of applying color can evoke powerful responses and reflections. The fluidity of paint can mirror our emotional states, making it a dynamic tool for self-exploration. What do you feel when you look at these colors and see that dark blue paint drip?

POETRY

The language we use profoundly shapes our self-perception and experiences. The messages we tell ourselves daily can either uplift or diminish our sense of self-worth. By consciously shifting our language to be more loving and affirmative, we create a more positive internal dialogue. Poetry serves as a powerful tool for this transformation, allowing us to express our thoughts in a way that nurtures our spirit and encourages self-compassion. Through the art of words, we can redefine our narratives and embrace a more empowering perspective.
